The Bremen CHSD 228 Board of Education on May 19 approved a slate of routine business items, voting unanimously by roll call on bills and payroll, bids, contract renewals and personnel recommendations.
The board approved item 6.1, described as “bills, addendum to bills, payroll, and CVS bills,” on a motion moved by Whitcomb and seconded by Gleeson. The board then approved item 6.2, the fall 2026 athletic bid results opened May 4, which totaled $22,573.96.
On item 6.3 the board approved the recommended fiscal year 2027 surety bond. Under item 6.4 administration recommended replacing aging driver-education minivans with four base-model Chevy Trax SUVs at $22,526 each through the Sourcewell cooperative; the motion to authorize purchase of four vehicles passed on roll call. The vehicles were presented as a long-term safety and economic value decision after finding the used minivan market “significantly inflated.”
The board approved item 6.5, a 2025–26 calendar abatement noting no emergency days were used and confirming the final day of school as Wednesday, May 27. Item 6.6 authorized a one-year renewal of the district’s Caper dot Co contract (the third-year term was ending); administration said reducing enrollment to 4,500 students for the vendor contract would yield more than $33,000 in savings and that current usage is about 60% daytime and 40% after-hours. The Illinois Association of School Boards membership renewal (item 6.7), the PRESS policy subscription (item 6.8), and board administrative travel to three conferences (item 6.9) were each approved.
The May personnel report listing resignations, retirements, new hires and a one-year contracted technology position was also recommended and approved by the full board.
Most motions were introduced by administrators, moved by board members (frequently Whitcomb or Gleeson) and carried by unanimous roll-call votes. The board subsequently moved into closed session under statutory citations 5 ILCS 120 (subsections 2(c)(1) and 2(c)(11)).
The board announced its next committee-of-the-whole meeting will be Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 6:45 p.m. at Bremen High School and its next regular board meeting on Tuesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. at the same location.
