Pittsburgh board previews vote to close school buildings, adopt ‘Future Ready’ plan

At an agenda-review meeting on May 20, 2026, the Pittsburgh Public Schools Board of Directors discussed a resolution to permanently close certain district school buildings and to adopt the district’s "Future Ready" facilities plan; the board did not vote and will take the measure up next week.

Board members focused early on how the plan would be governed after adoption. Director Silk proposed adding language to the resolution that would codify quarterly implementation updates to the board, saying, "I would like to add language that codifies quarterly implementation updates to the board." Superintendent Dr. Walters responded that quarterly updates would be appropriate and that the board and staff had discussed regular updates during planning.

Why it matters: The proposal would change where students attend, which properties the district maintains or disposes of, and how the district communicates progress to families and communities. Several directors said they want the resolution to contain explicit commitments on oversight and public updates so that the community can track implementation rather than having details decided only after a vote.

Board members also discussed creating an ad hoc committee to serve as the board’s point people on governance for plan implementation. Director York argued an ad hoc committee would provide clarity: "By creating a committee that's responsible for being the point person or point people on the board for managing the governance... we create a little bit more clarity for both ourselves and the public about how we're managing it." Several directors said the committee could be charged with working with administration to define what quarterly updates should include.

Directors raised questions about the fate of closed buildings and equity for neighborhoods that lose schools. Director Taliferro pressed for intentional reuse planning and warned against defaulting to sales that could later leave the district paying charter tuition in buildings it closed: "I fear that when we discuss closing schools... the buildings just sit there... become eyesores in community," she said, and cautioned that selling without a reuse strategy could have downstream costs.

The resolution as described in board materials incorporates the Future Ready facilities implementation plan, which directors said includes the materials presented to the board on Oct. 30, 2025 and in further detail on April 14, 2026. Chair noted the resolution posted in board docs includes the original version the board reconsidered in January and a suggested amended resolution; he said the board will likely vote on the item next week. Chair and others emphasized a minimum one-school-year planning period before any closures would take effect, meaning changes would not occur until the beginning of the 2027–28 school year if the plan is approved.

No formal motion or vote was taken during the agenda review. Directors agreed to work with staff to craft amendment language to present next week; Chair described a three-step process for next week’s meeting — move to consider the item, vote on amendments as a package, then vote on the original or amended plan.

Next steps: The board is scheduled to return the item for consideration and vote next week; staff and the directors who proposed amendments said they will collaborate with the board clerk to prepare the amendment language and oversight language to be considered at that meeting.
