Community organizer urges Chester youth to join block-captain program to improve neighborhoods

Michael Lewis, representing the Chester City Block Captains program and speaking as a Chester High alumnus, told the Committee of the Whole on May 21 that his team focuses on neighborhood beautification, park cleanups and improving block-level communication.
Lewis described the program’s goals — recruiting volunteers (including youth), arranging cleanups and connecting residents to resources — and invited students and community members to adopt city blocks through the program, which supplies cleanup materials to volunteers.
"To be a community organizer, I like to get straight to the point," Lewis said, asking students to 'step up' and join local efforts. He offered his phone number for follow-up and encouraged students to reach out if they wanted to help with neighborhood adoption projects.
Board members and meeting hosts asked attendees to contact Lewis and to consider block adoption opportunities after the meeting. No formal board action was recorded.
