Treasurer warns charter tuition drains district finances; proposed 2026–27 budget set for May 28 receivers meeting

At the Committee of the Whole on May 21, the district treasurer described the district’s fiscal role under receivership and said ongoing monitoring is needed as the Commonwealth finalizes the state budget.

The treasurer said major cost drivers include charter school tuition and health-care expenses, and that when a significant share of students attend charter schools much of state funding flows out of the district. "If you have a school district and the majority of the children in that school district are attending charter schools, the district is always going to be at a financial deficit," the treasurer said, urging community understanding of how charter tuition affects local district funding.

The treasurer said the proposed 2026–27 budget will be presented to the board and community at the receivers meeting on Thursday, May 28, and encouraged residents to attend that presentation and ask questions. He said the district met with EFM and vendor representatives to align assumptions and identify cost areas where reductions may be necessary.

District officials did not present a formal vote or adopt the budget at the May 21 meeting; they framed the session as an update and an invitation to the public to review the proposed numbers at the scheduled May 28 receivers meeting.
