Commissioners approve $75,000 county match for countywide water and sewer study

Houston County commissioners agreed to place on the Monday agenda an amended budget item increasing the county's match to $75,000 for a countywide water and sewer study.
County staff described the project as a long-range, 20-year strategic study that will analyze growth corridors, treatment-site placement and interconnections to achieve economies of scale. "It's a 20 year projection, growth projections and where the right basins are, where we could kinda put strategic infrastructure," said Dixon (speaker 2), who outlined the study's scope and noted the county is coordinating with the regional planning commission and federal economic development partners on a roughly 50/50 funding split.
Dixon said the study will emphasize sewer needs while also assessing municipal water capacity across Houston County and its municipalities, and will examine older, small systems that may be better served by regional solutions. Commissioners asked whether the study would examine municipal options and local wells; Dixon said it would "definitely touch all those" and that the analysis will include municipalities throughout the county.
Chair (speaker 8) said the county will seek a neutral, outside firm through an RFI to avoid perceived local conflicts in selecting a consultant. The chair then entertained a motion to amend the requested match to $75,000; the commission record shows the motion was made by Commissioner Ivy and seconded by Commissioner Adams. There were no objections to placing the amended item on the Monday agenda.
The change to $75,000 reflects the county's matching commitment; the item will appear on the next regular meeting agenda for formal adoption and final vote.
