The committee heard that the GEAR UP program has been reinstated at North High and Worcester East Middle after the state secured a partnership with MassEDCO and 7 Hills under the GEAR UP state grant.
An administration representative told the committee the grant is currently funded through 2032 and that GEAR UP staff are expected back at both sites in the coming weeks. “We are anticipating our GEAR UP staff back at North High and Worcester East Middle in the next few weeks,” the official said, and the district plans to run summer programming and be fully operational for the 2026‑27 school year.
Director of Grants Danielle Perillo confirmed the funding will be provided on an annual basis through the Department of Higher Education’s process; she said the department will notify the district if federal grant issues arise. A committee member asked whether a multi‑year contract secures the six‑year span; Perillo said the Department of Higher Education holds the longer funding arrangement and the district will monitor the grant annually.
The committee asked administration to file an updated report on both sites by January 2027 so members can assess program implementation and success measures. The committee voted to file the item and referred programmatic details to Teaching & Learning and the full committee as needed.
