A staff member for New Richmond Exempted Village Schools outlined contingency plans for the district27s graduation ceremony after forecasters predicted heavy rain that could affect the event.
"First, New Richmond schools will announce by 03:00 tomorrow if the ceremony will be held on Friday or move to Saturday," the staff member said, laying out a sequence of decision times and backup options that district leaders will use to confirm the ceremony schedule.
The plan sets multiple decision points. The staff member said the district would announce by 5 p.m. if it planned to delay the ceremony to 7 p.m. and by 6 p.m. if it planned to delay to 8 p.m.; if those windows were unusable, the ceremony would move to Saturday. For Saturday the district intends to begin at 4 p.m. with a go/no-go time at 2 p.m.; a move to 5 p.m. would be announced by 3 p.m., and any further delay would be called at least two hours in advance.
If continuing rain made an outdoor ceremony infeasible, the staff member said the district would try again on Sunday: the ceremony would be scheduled for 1 p.m. with a go/no-go decision by 10 a.m. "If the 1PM Sunday ceremony is a no go, we will move it into the New Richmond High School gym Sunday night at 6 to give our custodians and maintenance crew time to set up the building," the staff member said. The announcement warned that indoor seating would be "very limited." Students will be given "4 different indoor only tickets at rehearsal Friday morning," the staff member added.
The message included logistics for families: the staff member urged carpooling because wet conditions would eliminate roughly "about a 100 spots" of normal parking, warned that parking on the grass could lead to towing during the ceremony, and said the church lot across the street would have limited availability and a traffic director on site.
Band members were asked to check email and Google Classroom for a message from "mister McKinley," and the staff member said that if the ceremony moved indoors there "may or may not be a live band Saturday or Sunday." The district also pledged to "make every effort to record the indoor ceremony and share it with families and the community."
Closing the announcement, the staff member asked families to monitor the district27s usual communication channels: "Please keep an eye on district communication channels, websites, social media pages, and whatever else you can think of for more updates as the weekend unfolds. In the meantime, a little rain dance couldn't hurt. We'll update everyone as soon as we have more information."
