Sheila Bergman presented the Strong Bodies senior fitness program at the Bayfield County Aging and Disability Services Advisory Committee and Nutrition Advisory Council meeting on Feb. 24, describing current operations in Port Wing and plans to expand countywide.
Why it matters: Evidence‑based strength and balance exercises can reduce fall risk and support independence for older adults, and local leaders described the program as an accessible option for residents in their 70s–90s.
Bergman said she has led Strong Bodies in Port Wing for two years. The program is funded through UW–Extension and supported by three co‑leaders; classes run both in person and virtually and typically serve 10–15 participants per session. Many exercises are chair‑based and performed slowly to reduce injury risk; sessions include warm‑up walking, targeted exercises, and stretching cool‑downs. A physical therapist contributes to program development, and participants may use light hand weights.
Bergman told the committee the program is currently limited to Port Wing but staff and co‑leaders hope to train additional local leaders to enable expansion across the county. The committee received a handout and had no formal action on the presentation.
