Commission approves exterior restoration work at 700 South Main

The Middletown City Historic Commission voted to approve a Certificate of Appropriateness May 21 for exterior work at 700 South Main, a brick Queen Anne–style dwelling the staff described as the James Lawrence House.
Staff described the proposed work as placing protective caps on chimneys, repainting faded areas white, removing an enclosed north-side porch while retaining its original posts and railings, installing an exterior light post at the corner of 7th and Main connected to existing electrical service, landscaping per the submitted plans and undertaking tuckpointing to repair the brick.
Applicant Lori Taylor, who identified herself and said she owns the house and is often in town despite living in Florida, told commissioners she wants to restore the home to its original character, remove non-period porch walls and install chimney caps after an inspection recommended tuckpointing. "I had the chimneys inspected, and they need some tuckpointing done on the brick," Taylor said, and asked the commission to approve the plan to preserve the house's architectural character.
Commission members expressed support, called the application straightforward and approved the COA as submitted.
Next steps: staff will note the approval and the owner may proceed with obtaining required building permits for the work.
