Fosston student leaders recap service projects, leadership summit and fundraisers

High school and elementary student leaders presented at the board meeting to summarize this school year’s activities and community projects.

High school student council presenters described weekly community-service visits to an assisted-living facility where students played games and visited with residents. They outlined May’s National Mental Health Awareness Month activities — dress-up days and daily morning mental-health facts — and said they promoted resources for students. The council reported roughly $4,000 in expenditures and about $4,000 raised during the year; major fundraisers cited included the homecoming dance (about $1,500) and a lunch-time soda bar (about $441). The group said it plans a tentative fall leadership summit, currently proposed for Oct. 7, and reviewed a juniors-and-seniors trip to Craigins that they plan to continue biennially.

Elementary student leaders described character-development activities including a challenge course to build teamwork, staff appreciation events (treat parties and kindness boxes), a cereal drive and volunteering at the local food shelf, and a family game-drive that collected and wrapped board games for distribution at the food shelf. They said their group completed more than 80 random acts of kindness across the year and thanked other local schools and staff for support.
