Pacific Grove commits $750,000 match toward pier repairs and adopts SB1 projects list

The City Council approved a request from Public Works to commit $750,000 from the general fund as a matching contribution to a $750,000 pledge from the California Coastal Conservancy for structural repairs to the historic pier. Public Works staff said the pier sustained storm damage in 2022 and the project will encapsulate and reinforce the structure; the Conservancy will not finalize a matching agreement until the city demonstrates local match availability.
Staff noted they also applied for federal funds (via Rep. Jimmy Panetta’s office) and, if successful, that funding could replace the general-fund match. The total anticipated project cost was presented in earlier planning documents at roughly $1.5 million; staff said the city must show a committed match to secure the Conservancy pledge by September.
Council also reviewed FY2627 SB1-eligible road and pedestrian projects (slurry/crack-seal, curb ramps and selected roadway segments). Council approved the $750,000 commitment and adopted the SB1 project list by roll-call vote (5–0, Mayor Smith absent). Council members praised the plan and urged continued oversight of capital projects.
