Gloucester County commissioners table motion to place GCL question on ballot; residents press officials on GCIT funding

($122,952.26), and Stryker Sales, LLC ($40,664.12); - Public Works: contracts with Capela Construction, Inc. ($237,225.00), Paving Plus ($792,665.00) and South State, Inc. ($1,684,626.20); - Other items: a seasonal landscaping contract with TLC Landscape Co. (not to exceed $85,000) and a County Business Systems contract (up to $27,000 for the April 1, 2026–March 31, 2027 term).
Several residents used the public comment period to press the board on financial and labor issues at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology (GCIT). Martino Cartier of Washington Township asked whether a fundraiser could offset a reported GCIT deficit; Administrator Sweeney responded that he would look into the matter. A speaker identified as M. Sowers of Monroe Township addressed the board on behalf of the GCIT union and urged a fair contract. Shannon Lippincott of Millville read a statement into the record regarding ongoing negotiations between teachers and the district.
County Treasurer Tracey Giordano provided budget context for the discussion, telling the board that the 2026 budget already included $8,550,000 for GCIT and that an additional $250,000 was being proposed; she noted the 2026 budget was approved by a 5–2 vote.
No formal vote on the GCL ballot question occurred; the board adjourned at 6:56 p.m. The commissioners approved the listed contractual and grant items as part of the consent/resolution blocks presented during the meeting.
