Committee members reviewed a research summary of environmental impacts associated with sprawl and debated what Sunset Beach's Environmental Resource Committee can practically do.
The list presented to the ERC included common sprawl consequences: loss of wetlands and coastal habitats, increased stormwater runoff and pollution, habitat fragmentation, declining water quality in tidal creeks and estuaries, and greater vulnerability to storm surge and sea-level rise. Members observed that some impacts (for example, inlet dynamics) fall under state or federal jurisdiction and are not within town control, but the group identified several town-level avenues to address environmental impacts.
Proposed ERC actions included: expanding public education (workshops, market-day outreach), coordinating with the tree board to broaden tree protection goals beyond town-owned land, submitting recommendations to the ongoing comprehensive-plan update and Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) processes, and participating in public meetings where county or regional plans are discussed. The committee noted legal constraints on local regulation of private development in North Carolina and emphasized that public awareness and participation in planning processes are likely the most immediate levers the ERC can use.
Chair Kim Wheaton asked members to bring specific, actionable recommendations to the next ERC meeting so the committee can avoid spinning on broad research and instead present targeted options for council and planning staff.
