GUSD to keep family supports running over summer, launches parent ESL class

Greenfield Union School District Superintendent Dr. Laura Cortez and Director of Family and Community Engagement and People Services Mayra Villagomez said the district will continue offering family support services through the summer and has launched a new parent English-as-a-Second-Language education class for about 30 families.

"We have multiple agencies that come and service our community, such as EDD, Monterey County Health Department with their core program," Director Mayra Villagomez said, describing partnerships the department uses to provide health, employment and nutrition resources to families. She also cited the Salinas Valley Health Department's mobile clinic and the Monterey County Food Bank as regular partners.

The department runs monthly parent cafés and Saturday parent workshops, Villagomez said, and those programs — along with the newly launched ESL parent classes — will continue over the summer at the district's family resource center. Villagomez said the ESL class currently includes about 30 families who are "developing their English language skills."

Dr. Cortez praised Villagomez and the district liaisons who support families, saying the services are "super vital resources for our community" and that empowered parents help students at home. The short segment, part of the district's "60 Seconds with GUSD," served as an informational update rather than a policy discussion.
