Finney elected chair; Shoaff chosen vice chair of Davie County board

Bonita Finney was elected chair of the Davie County Board of County Commissioners and Brent Shoaff was elected vice chair during the board’s organizational meeting.

County Attorney Vogler opened nominations “pursuant to North Carolina general statute” and asked the board for nominees for chair. An unnamed commissioner nominated Finney; the nomination was seconded and Vogler called for a vote and announced a 3-0 vote in favor. The attorney then opened nominations for vice chair; Shoaff was nominated, seconded, and the chair declared the election closed and turned the meeting over to Finney to continue business.

The nominations and votes followed the board’s adopted rules and Robert’s Rules procedures cited on the record; Vogler explained that if more than one person were nominated the board would vote in nomination order and the first person to obtain a majority would be declared chair. The minutes recorded the motions, seconds and the chair’s announcement of the results but did not record individual roll-call vote names in the verbal announcement.

The new leadership took over routine business, including agenda review and moving the meeting into regular items. No contested nominations or recorded dissent on the results were entered into the public record at the meeting.

The board proceeded to review the rest of the agenda under the new chair.
