Cooleemee mayor says community center project moving forward, completion target remains aggressive

Mayor Smith of Cooleemee updated the Davie County Board of Commissioners on plans for a new Cooleemee Community Center and the town’s effort to relocate its library into the new facility.
Smith said design drawings are finished, zoning is complete and permitting is in progress. "The drawings are done… Our completion target date is still June 30, which is aggressive, but we still believe we can work through that," he told commissioners. He said the bid process is completed though "we have a couple we still need to sort through." (Mayor Smith)
The mayor described the center as roughly comparable in footprint to the existing Zachary House (about 5,000 square feet) and said the library portion is planned at about 1,400 square feet. He said the project is intended to create a campus around the Zachary House, provide meeting and program space, and host community events such as July 4 activities, movies and teacher appreciation meals.
Smith outlined the funding picture: the state initially provided a $500,000 grant that became a $1,000,000 award, the county has been a key partner, and the town has already spent about $150,000 on site preparation work such as pool demolition and surveying. He said the town expects to contribute roughly 20% of the overall cost. "This project is through a great partnership between the state, the county, and the town," Smith said. (Mayor Smith)
Commissioners thanked Smith for the update and for the town’s work on the project. No formal vote or action was taken; the presentation concluded with questions about timeline and funding follow-up, which Smith and staff said they would supply to the board.
