Neighbors urge removal of pickleball lines at Rainier Trails; council favors waiting for Garrett Park resurfacing

Richard Gardine, a Stonebrook neighborhood resident, said pickleball players have used the Rainier Trails court daily since May 2025 and that noise affects homes as close as about 30 feet away. He told the council that the parks board passed a motion to remove the pickleball lines and asked council to discuss removing the lines and restoring the court to tennis-only after resurfacing and after new courts at Garrett Park open.
Council committee members reported a spirited discussion in committee and described two options: remove the lines now or wait until Garrett Park is resurfaced and the new seven-court facility is available (work expected to start May 18). Several council members, including Storton and others, said they prefer waiting for Garrett Park to come online before removing the Rainier Trails lines; Council member Orsut voiced concern about spending tax dollars to remove existing striping and urged fiscal caution. The council agreed to revisit the issue at the next meeting on May 18.
