District reports progress in Professional Learning Communities to strengthen instruction

Principal Malissa Weatherbie reported to the Lake Stevens School District Board on April 29 that Professional Learning Community (PLC) work at Mount Pilchuck Elementary and across district elementary schools has focused staff on essential standards, common formative assessments and strategies to support students not yet mastering key concepts.
Weatherbie said the PLC framework has fostered greater teacher collaboration, more reflective and data-driven conversations, and a shift toward consistency across classrooms in grade-level teams. She described next steps that include vertical teaming across grade levels, efforts to strengthen transitions to middle school and collaboration with the Early Learning Center and multilingual/resource staff.
Superintendent Dr. Mary Templeton and President David Iseminger asked clarifying questions; Director Paul Lund described the shift as moving from “my students” to “our students,” highlighting student voice and SACo contributions. SACo President Aashi Bendalam thanked staff for the updates.
