Mayor Merchant opens Sumter Art Park, calls it a new gathering place for youth and local artists

Mayor David Merchant presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open the Sumter Art Park in Sumter City, welcoming residents to the newly completed public space. "I’m Mayor David Merchant and I like to welcome everybody here for a long awaited, exciting ribbon cutting we're going to do today," he said, framing the moment as the community's long-anticipated celebration.

Merchant said the park is intended to "provide our youth places they can go and recreate" and to incorporate the public art that appears on a mural at the site. He urged "all of Sumter to come out and be a part of this," noting the park offers space to "come play ball with your kids or come out and just see the art." The mayor described the site as a place for gathering, play and learning that will bring renewal to the surrounding neighborhood.

Physical features Merchant highlighted include basketball courts, a playground and murals that showcase local artists. "You see a recreation of basketball courts here. You see the art ... where young kids are interested in art," he said, presenting the park as an "amalgamation of a number of things" intended to serve multiple community needs.

Merchant thanked project partners by name, citing the Team Sumter delegation and Edward Trust and crediting collaboration with Melanie Copeland, who "at that time, was with the Cultural Commission here in Sumter." He invoked teamwork repeatedly, saying "team work that makes the dream work" and that "team work has made this dream a reality."

The mayor closed by encouraging residents to use the park for recreation and community gatherings. The ceremony marked the park's opening to the public; Merchant invited the community to visit the site and enjoy the new amenities.
