The Public Art Commission approved a revised traffic-signal box design for the Escanido Expressions program during the May 18 meeting.
Staff summarized the submission history: an earlier Rainbow Bridge submission had been rejected because it included commercial imagery (bottles and a slogan). The applicant resubmitted an updated design removing the disputed bottle images and the "all-in-one" slogan. Staff reported they had consulted with the city attorney previously and judged the revised submission free of advertising.
Commissioners moved, seconded and approved the resubmitted box design. Staff stated that, with the payment for box #40, the program will have completed the planned 40 boxes for the fiscal year and any remaining Escanido Expressions funds will roll to the Escondido Creek Trail fund.
Why it matters: The traffic-signal box program places artwork in many neighborhoods and is intended to distribute public-art visibility across the city; approval of the final box completes the current-year installation goal.
