Commission approves 2026–27 public art annual work plan with funding adjustments

The Public Art Commission reviewed and approved the recommended 2026–27 Public Art annual work plan on May 18.
Staff (Sandra Agalar) summarized completed steps in the work-plan timeline and presented recommended projects: rolling solicitations, project-expansion grants, tactical urbanism curb-extension pilot around schools in partnership with the Traffic Engineering Department, and a suite of education and outreach efforts including art education and career-impact workshops.
Key funding recommendations documented in the staff presentation included adding $1,583 from leftover Escandido Expressions funds to the Escondido Creek Trail fund; designating an $83,968 reserve for future large projects; and increasing the Arts, Culture and Creativity Month budget to $100,000 to cover more grants, marketing and banners. Commissioners discussed the timing and whether current-year expenditures (Escanido Expressions boxes) might affect next year’s allocations.
A motion to approve the annual work plan as recommended by the subcommittee passed during the meeting. The plan will be forwarded to city council in August 2026 for review and adoption as part of the city’s fiscal process.
