High school engineering students demonstrate weather drone at DMPS board meeting

At the May 5 Des Moines Public Schools board meeting, four Central Campus students and their instructor demonstrated a year‑long creative engineering capstone: a weather drone designed to operate in high winds and low temperatures.
Student presenters Jackson Berry, Evan Osterhaus, Ramas Bakrell and Austin Rice explained they built the drone to gather real weather data in conditions where many commercial drones are unreliable. "We wanted to create a drone that helped fill the gap in current technology where many commercial drones nowadays are incapable of flying in areas with high wind speed and low temperature," one student said.
The team described learning CAD modeling, coding, radio communications and soldering during the project and showed a video of a recent successful lift test. Instructor Steven Burns invited board members and the public to a fuller presentation scheduled the following day.
Board members praised the students’ work and encouraged them to consider returning to Des Moines after college to contribute to the local workforce.
