Des Moines board splits personnel item, tables communications director vote until May 19

At the May 5 Des Moines Public Schools board meeting members approved the district’s consent and personnel recommendations but split and later tabled one hire: the director of communications, marketing and public affairs.
Ms. Alonzo moved to approve the consent agenda, and Mr. Dix successfully moved to remove personnel item D5 from the consent package for discussion. The board voted to split D5 so that the communications director recommendation would be considered separately; that split passed 5–2. The personnel slate excluding that single position was then approved 7–0.
When the removed recommendation came before the board later in the meeting, Ms. Hopkins moved to table the single recommendation to allow more time for review; Ms. Alonzo seconded. The motion to table passed 5–2, and the board set the item for the May 19 board meeting.
Board members said the tabling was intended to give more time to review materials that were posted close to the meeting. The consent agenda presented at the meeting included bills previously authorized in the amount of $3,418,921.11 and procurement card transactions totaling approximately $638,700.60.
The split and tabling mean the district will not fill the communications director position until the May 19 meeting at the earliest, when the board will revisit the recommendation.
