The Fremont City Council voted 8–0 to authorize the mayor to sign an FAA-administered grant agreement, approving a $5.103 million taxiway rehabilitation project at the Fremont municipal airport that will include pavement replacement, drainage work and taxiway lighting upgrades.
Dean Gillas, director of public works, told the council the project grew from an original budget estimate of $2.7 million after design work revealed the need to move runway connections to meet FAA standards and to replace older, frequently inoperable incandescent taxiway lights with LEDs. "They said, 'Thumbs up. We're going to include that in the project,'" Gillas said of FAA and state reviewers.
Under the grant, the FAA will fund 95% of eligible costs, with the Nebraska Department of Transportation administering the grant for the FAA and contributing roughly 2% (about $64,000). The city’s share is roughly $192,750, Gillas said; the increased local contribution reflects the larger project scope.
Council members praised staff for capitalizing on the funding opportunity and noted the airport’s role as a community asset. After no public comment, Councilman Jensen moved to approve resolution 2026-093 and Councilman Horner seconded; the resolution passed 8–0.
What’s next: staff said the city will finalize the state agreement administered by NDOT and execute design and construction agreements; the work is expected to proceed using the current grant window.
