The Tempe Development Review Commission on May 12, 2026 continued a planned‑area‑development overlay request for “Tempe Oasis,” a proposal to convert an existing hotel at 1635 North Scottsdale Road into a 142‑unit multifamily project with ground‑floor commercial space (PL260032). The commission agreed to revisit the item at its next regular meeting on June 9, 2026 so the applicant can appear in person.
Commissioner Michelle Spears moved to continue PL260032 to June 9 to allow the applicant to present; Commissioner Joe Forte seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The chair said one applicant participant had been online but could not be heard due to technical problems with the city’s Teams connection; the property owner was present in the audience but was not the applicant.
The proposal would establish development standards for the MU4 zoning district to enable reuse of an existing hotel as multifamily housing with 142 units. Staff presented the case summary and confirmed the project is listed on the meeting as item 5A. Commissioners did not take final action on standards, conditions or design at the May 12 meeting; the continuance preserves the commission’s opportunity to receive a full presentation and public input when the applicant is available.
Earlier in the meeting the commission approved two consent agendas. The first consent agenda included four items and passed unanimously: a request for Mountain America Credit Union at 1220 West Elliot Road to exceed 125% of required parking for a new 4,035‑square‑foot bank with drive‑thru (item 4A); a request for Tempe Carport office at 1336 West 13th Place to allow two required parking spaces in the front yard setback (item 4B); a request for Aquacrossings at 1818 West 4th Street to allow aquamation in the GID zoning district (item 4C); and a request to allow a bar/tavern for Little Quail at 764 West Broadway Road (item 4D). The second consent agenda consisted of a zoning and development code text amendment (item 6A) to reduce parking requirements in the Transportation Overlay District (TOD) and passed with five votes in favor and one abstention by Commissioner Barbara Lloyd.
The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for June 9, 2026. The May 12 meeting adjourned after staff and commissioners offered no further announcements.
