Residents urge council to repaint crosswalks and step up enforcement after missed trash pickups

Carol Thomas, who gave her address as 170 West Charlotte Street, told council that "they still haven't gotten" the trash from the last pickup and said "those four houses" at the end of her block are repeatedly missed because the contractor does not always appear to know which properties are in the borough. Borough Manager Rebecca said staff has "addressed it with Pen Waste multiple times" and asked residents to continue reporting missed pickups so the borough can create work orders.
A separate resident who said she now uses a walker asked council to repaint the crosswalk that connects West Frederick Street to North Duke Street and requested that staff study installation of a traffic signal at that intersection, citing new developments that have increased traffic. The resident said the crosswalk needs repainting before school opens and told council, "Someone is going to get hurt."
Council and staff responded that enforcement could be increased in the area and that crosswalk painting is scheduled for the end of the summer because "that's when we do crosswalk painting every year." Staff said code enforcement could look into large trash cans left on narrow sidewalks that force pedestrians into the road.
What happens next: Borough staff asked residents to report missed trash pickups to ensure work orders are issued to the contractor and said code enforcement will monitor sidewalk obstructions. The city-maintenance schedule lists crosswalk painting for late summer; residents asked that high-priority spots be painted sooner.
