District 211 outlines summer projects, 2027 planning and a solar RFP as enrollment pressures grow at Conent High School

The Township High School District 211 Board of Education on March 12 received a detailed update on facilities and capital projects and approved authorizing district architects to begin planning for summer 2027 work and seeking proposals for rooftop solar.
Chief Operating Officer Lauren Hmel and Director of Facilities Ricky Sparks walked the board through the district’s Section 9.4 strategic‑plan goals for safety, functionality and modernization, noting the district’s completed 10‑year facility audit (October 2023) and a slate of projects in progress. "As a district, we remain committed to a proactive, long‑term approach to maintaining our facilities," Hmel said during the presentation.
Sparks described the scope of immediate summer work the board has already approved for 2026: a complete Hoffen Estates locker‑room renovation (accessible showers, new mechanicals, sprinklers and electrical upgrades), Palatine High School auditorium improvements (ADA lift, upgraded rigging and LED house lights), and roof replacements covering roughly 39,000 square feet across five areas that were originally installed in 1988–89. At Palatine the district also plans to replace aging chillers and the cooling tower; Sparks said existing equipment had reached its recommended life expectancy and had not been operating reliably together.
District staff outlined routine maintenance and lifecycle projects slated across campuses — paving repairs, gym refinishing, pool timing system replacements, LED lighting upgrades and continuing security camera and access enhancements. The administration said it has identified about $3 million in reductions in the current five‑year projection and is targeting a further $6 million to refine summer 2027 planning while stressing that delaying replacement work can increase long‑term costs.
Board members focused discussion on Conent High School, which the presentation said is approaching roughly 2,600 students and shows rising needs for multilingual services, intervention supports and new instructional programming. The administration recommended a professional utilization and capacity assessment to identify how space is being used and what longer‑term solutions are required. Several trustees urged that any plan consider boundary alternatives and district‑wide capacity rather than addressing Conent in isolation.
The board voted to authorize architects to begin planning for summer 2027 projects and to direct administration to pursue an RFP for potential solar arrays to take advantage of federal tax incentives through 2027; administration said RFP results would be shared by June 2026. The motions passed by roll call.
