Neighbors oppose reopening junkyard near residential area, tell Shelby County Board

Two neighbors urged the Shelby County Board to oppose a special permit to reopen a junkyard adjacent to a residential subdivision.
Matt Overbeck said he and his wife bought their home in 2022 with the expectation the junkyard would not be operational; he told the board the property back of his home now adjoins the junkyard and that recent activity included hauling vehicles and scrap metal onto the site. "We purchased our home in 2022 and at the time it was not an operational junkyard... if it would have we never would have purchased our property," Overbeck said.
Hannah Overbeck echoed her husband's concerns, saying the area has become residential and that neighbors would be exposed to noise, unsightliness and traffic if the operation resumes. She said she had observed activity as recently as the same day and urged the board to consider present conditions rather than past use.
County officials noted the permit has been postponed and will be considered at a later meeting; the public comment was recorded so the board could hear neighbor concerns before any vote.
