The Village Board of Trustees on May 14 confirmed policy direction for proposed fence-code updates and set a joint public hearing with the Planning & Zoning Commission for June 17 at 7 p.m., with formal board consideration of the entire zoning code (which includes the fence amendments) expected at the board's July 9 meeting.
Staff said the discussion on May 14 was intended to verify that the draft ordinance reflects prior board direction rather than to adopt final text. The updated approach limits by-right residential fencing to qualifying major roads and arterial-street properties, clarifies administrative standards for setbacks, gate placement, visibility triangles and safety, and preserves by-right fences adjacent to non-residential districts (examples cited include fences behind Walgreens and along Joliet Road).
Board members identified a typographical error in the packet that mischaracterized some commercial-adjacent fences as special uses; staff said they would correct that to reflect that such fences remain by-right. Trustees also raised a question about a minimum setback provision (section 1B5) — whether mower-clearance considerations require a 3-foot setback rather than 2 feet — and staff committed to confirm and correct the draft if necessary.
Why it matters: The proposed rules aim to balance safety, privacy and neighborhood character while improving clarity and consistent enforcement. The village will publish a final draft online at least two weeks before the June 17 joint hearing and follow established public-notice procedures.
What's next: The joint public hearing on June 17 at 7:00 p.m.; board vote on the full zoning code including fence provisions is expected July 9, 2026.
