Two seniors present journalism and capstone projects to the board

Two Regional School District 12 seniors presented their yearlong work to the board on April 6.
Lexi Thomas, a senior who has taken over the Spartan Times, described the student newspaper as her senior project. She said she has published three editions so far, uses Adobe InDesign to lay out the paper, maintains an online archive with library staff, and is working to recruit and train juniors to succeed her. “How can a student‑led newspaper inform, engage and empower a school community?” she said, framing the project’s goal. Board members praised her initiative, asked about succession planning and recruitment of student writers, and offered support for distribution at community businesses.
Hayden Fischer described converting a senior project into a capstone focused on hands‑on work at a local property (Lynen Hill). Fischer said his capstone included landscaping, beekeeping and alpaca care, and required about 100 summer hours. He described the experiential learning value and plans for a final presentation and national SAPE application.
Both students answered questions about handing off their work to underclassmen and connecting projects to community outlets. The board encouraged continued documentation and outreach; no formal board action was required.
