Belton ISD reports districtwide rollout of Hope Squad and gains in campus culture

Belton ISD staff gave trustees an update May 18 on Goal Four strategies designed to strengthen student support and school culture, reporting completion of phase one of a districtwide Hope Squad implementation and progress in a parallel Capturing Kids Hearts initiative.

Staff described Hope Squad’s year-one focus: identifying advisors and student nominees at each campus, conducting training, engaging parents and implementing campus activities. Elementary campuses emphasized kindness (examples: posters and classroom activities); middle schools focused on anti-bullying campaigns and teacher affirmation processes; high schools emphasized connection through teacher-led classes and student programs. A district-wide "We Missed You" postcard campaign targeted chronically absent students with personal notes; staff cited research showing connection improves attendance.

Capturing Kids Hearts campuses were also highlighted: Lakewood Elementary secured national showcase recognition, several campuses earned "rising star" status for early implementation results, and staff outlined a five-point rubric used for evaluation that includes culture, achievement, behavior and staff retention.

Staff said district leaders will use summer work to design phase two of Hope Squad and refine Capturing Kids Hearts implementation. Trustees commended the student ownership of programs and the cross-departmental effort to scale supports.

No additional formal board action was taken at the meeting on these items; staff will return with phase-two plans and implementation timelines.
