Students honored: Terre Haute South FFA wins district titles; three Vigo County students earn Swope Art Museum merit awards

Students from Terre Haute South and school arts programs appeared before the Vigo County School Corporation board Monday to report recent achievements and invite board support.

Matt Marion, agriculture teacher and FFA advisor at Terre Haute South, said his chapter saw strong results at District 7 leadership development events: Anna Steiner was district champion in agricultural sales and will represent the district at state competition, and her brother won the agricultural mechanics demonstration. Marion said the chapter nearly doubled participation this year (from about 10–12 students to more than 20) and hopes to exceed 30 next year; he also described student supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs) including show‑pig sales and an ag machinery detailing business.

Students Anna Steiner and Elijah Pearman — both serving as district officers for the newly redrawn District 9 — described how FFA improved their communication and leadership skills and prepared them for college and careers.

Janet Brosmer, the district art coordinator, presented the Vigo County School Corporation winners from the 59th annual student art exhibition at the Swope Art Museum. Of 101 high‑school entries, 47 were chosen for the show and five merit awards were presented; three merit awards went to Vigo County students: Alan Norse (Terre Haute North), Amberly Robinson (Terre Haute North), and Mikayla Miklosic (Terre Haute South Vigo). Each student briefly introduced their piece and answered board member questions.

The board praised students and teachers and was invited to the FFA awards banquet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Terre Haute South cafeteria.
