Mechanicsburg Area SD recognizes state-qualifying speech and debate students and honors retiring tax collector

The Mechanicsburg Area School District Board of Directors used part of its May 12 meeting to recognize students and long-serving district staff.
Leanne Chow introduced eight of the nine high school students who qualified for the Pennsylvania High School Speech & Debate state tournament and spoke about the program’s growth and alumni support; she thanked an alumni bequest that helped cover travel and participation costs. Student Aiden Pinskar described how the team had grown since his freshman year and praised coach Chow. "I hope this becomes a tradition," Pinskar said, urging that the activity be viewed alongside other extracurriculars.
Later the board honored Barry Heckard for 32 years of service as the district’s elected tax collector. Board members and Greg Longwell praised Heckard’s accuracy, partnership and assistance with a property tax rebate program. The board will add Heckard’s name to the district wall of legacy and presented him with an "apple" award given to employees with 25 or more years of service.
Both recognitions were presented without debate. The transcript records applause for the students and for Heckard; the recognitions conclude with board members inviting students to leave after receiving gifts and thanking them for representing the district.
