Board accepts resignation of Director Bob Hornberger; members praise his service

The Springfield School District Board of School Directors on May 14 accepted the resignation of School Board Director Bob Hornberger (region 5, ward 6), effective June 1, 2026. The board approved the resignation by a 6–0 vote.

President Lord opened the remarks, thanking Hornberger for his service and noting Hornberger had "jumped right in" and contributed quickly after joining the board. Several members echoed those sentiments and said they wished Hornberger and his family well as they prepare to move to Hawaii.

Hornberger addressed the board, saying he was "emotional," thanked President Lord, Vice President Laughlin and other board members for their support, and praised staff including Dr. Barber and Mr. Lemieux for helping him get up to speed. He said he will remain in touch with the district.

Board members presented Hornberger with a signed soccer ball and made light conversation about his plans; President Lord noted details about the replacement process would be posted on the district website for anyone interested in the seat.

Hornberger also gave the DCIU board report during the liaison reports portion of the meeting, saying five search firms had been identified to assist with hiring a new DCIU executive director, that a recent school safety report was positive and that 90% of career and technical students passed NOCTI credentials at proficient or above. He announced the next DCIU meeting will be held June 3 at the Morton campus.

The board's acceptance of Hornberger's resignation was unanimous (6–0). The district said replacement information would be posted on the website.
