Goldsboro City Council voted May 18 to approve a veteran stand‑down planned for July 15 that will bring multiple partners together to offer health care enrollment, housing‑voucher assessment, benefits assistance and direct referrals for veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
HUD‑VASH (VA housing and outreach staff) and New Hope Community Center outlined the event as a one‑stop opportunity to connect veterans with rapid housing assessment and enrollment in VA services. "No veteran who has served should be homeless," said HUD‑VASH staff during the council briefing. New Hope described its experience housing unsheltered veterans and requested a fee waiver, street closure and public safety assistance for the event.
Council action: Council unanimously approved the applicant request to waive fees, close the stated street block and provide police support for the stand‑down. Staff said coordinated outreach will cover five surrounding counties and will work with the national homeless hotline to identify veterans who need services.
