The Metropolitan School District of Steuben County board on May 19 recognized its top 10 graduating seniors and named Mandy Walker of Angola High School as the 2026 District Teacher of the Year. Principal Mr. Havens introduced the students, noting the senior class earned more than $1 million in scholarships this year and more than $4.3 million across four years.
Dr. Elu, who presented the teacher awards, read peer nominations for each school’s Teacher of the Year and praised Mandy Walker as “the kind of educator who quietly transforms lives every single day,” citing her work as a special‑education teacher and mentor. The board presented Walker with the district Golden Apple award. The meeting also noted several upcoming retirements and local music and academic team achievements as the district prepared for graduation at Trine University’s MCI Center.
