Irrigation line failure floods Menlo Park library basement; donated books damaged

Staff said the leak was discovered by an overnight custodian and Public Works was called; crews shut off the water and emergency contractors deployed blowers and dehumidifiers to dry the space. Staff reported that several boxes of donated books stored on the floor were ruined and that a small amount of staff materials was damaged. The Historical Society materials were reported to be okay.
Commissioners and staff noted the building’s known drainage vulnerabilities (small drains that can clog with leaves) and discussed prevention measures, including earlier detection systems. Staff described the scene as demoralizing but said the damage was contained and cleanup was underway.
The Commission closed its meeting after the update; staff said they will continue repair and recovery work and will keep the Commission informed of outcomes and any insurance or replacement steps.
