Millbrook recognizes winter scholar-athletes and Model UN delegates for state-level achievements

The Millbrook Central School District honored student accomplishments Tuesday, recognizing both winter scholar‑athlete teams and members of the Model United Nations delegation who returned from a four‑day conference in New York City.

At the start of the meeting board members applauded the girls and boys varsity winter track teams after they met the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s scholar‑athlete criteria. Individual students whose grade‑point averages met the threshold were also recognized, and certificates will be delivered to the high school because board president Dr. Hartick was absent.

Dr. Melissa Betts, the Model UN advisor, told the board the club sent 20 students to the conference and that two of the district’s committees earned top distinctions while four teams were invited to speak at the closing ceremonies. “They really put hundreds of hours into preparing,” Betts said, and the students “performed admirably” in front of peers, advisors and distinguished guests.

Head delegate Adam Francia described fierce multilateral debate in a committee on the World Trade Organization and said the experience strengthened students’ public‑speaking and research skills. “It was a lot of work, a lot of people and a lot of minds,” Francia said. First‑year delegate Sophie Stalker said she helped draft resolutions on preserving agricultural heritage and building resilient food systems and was honored to speak at the closing ceremony.

Board members and staff praised the students’ dedication and noted the logistical work by parents and advisors that supports extracurricular success. Dr. Watkins was named to take group photos for the district newsletter, and the board invited the recognized students to pose by a banner for publication.

The district also noted several end‑of‑year events including AP exams, spring arts displays and upcoming graduation activities.
