Chair Teresa Smith opened the May 19 meeting of the Prince George's County Board of Education Disability Issues Advisory Board by noting May is Mental Health Awareness Month and saying, "For the disability community, mental health awareness isn't just a calendar event. It is a daily reality and a core pillar of true access." The board then considered and approved its proposed 2026–27 work plan with several amendments.
Members debated topic placement and scope before voting. Board member Miss Doyle asked for staffing and reasonable‑accommodation topics to be better reflected in the plan, noting the committee has raised concerns about "the length of time PGCPS takes to respond to reasonable accommodations requests." Chair Smith said she would follow up with HR to clarify whether administrative procedures would address staff accommodations and to avoid duplicative work.
The board discussed scheduling to ensure DIAB could provide timely input on district budgeting and the capital improvement program (CIP). Members agreed to move the district budget discussion to December so the advisory board's recommendations could better inform the district and legislative timelines, and to schedule a CIP discussion in August (ahead of the CIP public hearing in September). The draft also removes the March mental‑health placeholder and replaces May's "peer‑to‑peer bullying" slot with an Equity Assurance Office (EAO) update.
After discussion, a motion to approve the work plan "as stated with the changes that have been discussed" was moved and seconded. A roll‑call vote was taken; with nine members present, the motion passed unanimously 9–0.
The board directed staff and members to follow up on the reasonable‑accommodations clarification with HR and to plan an August special meeting or subcommittee work to prepare DIAB input for the September CIP public hearing. The committee will revisit topics during the year if BP1700 or other district actions require changes.
