Public safety committee lacks quorum; courthouse & property committee approves reports, removes Bridge Bedford item

The Bedford County public safety committee reconvened on May 19 but did not have a quorum and was unable to conduct business, the committee chair said.
"As most of you know without a quorum you cannot do any business," the Public Safety Chair stated, noting several members were absent for personal reasons. Committee members were told they could place reports on file for the record and the meeting was journaled.
Later the Courthouse & Property Committee called to order with a quorum present and approved the April 21 minutes and all routine reports by voice vote. Committee members removed a Bridge Bedford agenda item because an outside participant requested a last‑minute date change; the chair said the item will be returned once a new date is confirmed.
The codes report showed continued building activity, with 20 more permits issued in April 2026 than in April 2025, reflecting ongoing growth in the county. A committee member raised a scheduling concern about planning and zoning meetings occurring the same evening as the commission meeting and asked whether the planning meeting could be moved earlier in the day. "Even if we could drop it down to like 5:30 or 5:45, it would give everybody the opportunity to go to both," a committee member said.
The committee also received brief updates from IT, fire, E911 and GIS staff and approved the packet of reports for filing. No substantive policy votes or new budget actions were taken at the meeting.
