Architect wins board approval to use historic metal grid for Pier Street porches; stairs deferred
Summary
Representing Pier Street Gateway, architect Lauren Dionish showed historic photos indicating a metal grid baluster; the board approved using a metal grid rather than wood balusters, a board member recused for conflict, and the proposed symmetrical stairs were deferred for a later detailed submission.

Architect Lauren Dionish presented historic photographs and asked the board to approve use of a metal grid in place of turned wood balusters on the east and west porches for the Pier Street Gateway project. Dionish said the photos show a 6x6 grid material that she described as durable and visually consistent with the historic images and that the intent is to restore the porches toward their historic appearance rather than to add a modern reproduction. A board member who serves on the Pier Street Gateway board recused from the vote.
Board members discussed whether a later submission would be required for the stairs on both sides; Dionish asked for the option to add stairs on the west (13th Street) side to match the east if grant conditions or funders require it. The board approved the baluster material as presented and instructed that any stair details return to the board for review.
Dionish said the team will pursue grant funding and that the chosen grid material meets safety requirements while reflecting the historic evidence. The board clarified the stairs must come back as a separate, later application.
