Council approves $2,500 to support volunteer-run Music in the Park series

The Lake Stevens City Council approved a $2,500 cash contribution on May 19 to support the Lake Stevens Arts & Parks Foundation’s Music in the Park summer concert series.
Parks Director Sarah Garzo explained the foundation requested city support after the mayor’s proposed budget omitted the event. Kate McKenzie, who chairs the foundation’s park committee, said organizers secured a small grant from the Washington State Arts Commission to underwrite the Lake Stevens Community Band’s participation in a national America 250 celebration and that they reduced the city request this year to $2,500 (down from prior contributions around $4,000–$5,000).
Council members asked about contingency plans if city funding were not approved; organizers said they would pursue business sponsors and small stipends for visiting community bands but that the community band plays without pay. Council members said they supported the event for its family focus and local volunteer base, noted parking and logistics issues, and approved the contribution by voice vote. The grant will be added via supplemental budget and reimbursed per night (maximum $500 per night for up to five nights).
