The Los Altos School Board unanimously approved new district facility standards for new construction and modernization, a document district staff said will standardize materials, systems and educational specifications used in future projects.
Staff explained the draft includes a placeholder for landscape standards pending input from Living Classroom and grounds staff. Jamal Kevich, a public commenter, asked the board to ensure landscape plans favor native, drought-tolerant plants and to get feedback from grounds staff; staff agreed to incorporate that input.
Board members queried technical specifications, including a data-port standard that lists a high number of classroom data ports (16) and whether that overstates current needs given widespread wireless use. Staff said they consulted maintenance and operations teams, several site administrators and principals to arrive at baseline specifications and that value engineering will be applied during design to avoid over-specification.
A motion to approve the facility standards for new construction and modernization was moved and seconded and passed unanimously.
What happens next: Staff will finalize landscape and educational-specification details and return the document as needed; the standards will guide future bids and material choices for contracted projects.
