Student leadership awards honor dozens; student representatives call for better busing

The Waterberry Board of Education recognized students from across the district as recipients of the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education Student Leadership Awards. Jan Frenis announced winners from individual schools, naming recipients from Carrington, Crosby, Dugen, Gil Martin, Kennedy, North End, Reed, Wallace, Waterberry Arts schools, Waterberry Career Academy, Wendel Cross, Westside, and Wilby.
Student representative Aiden Mahia of Crosby High School summarized recent academic and extracurricular highlights, saying Crosby had strong preliminary grade 11 SAT results and that "over 85% of our grade nine students are on track receiving passing grades in six or more of their classes." He also credited community partners and described renovations and new facilities. His colleague Arhani Smiley noted athletic achievements and other activities, then raised a practical concern about transportation: "Many students report buses being late, packed, and at times failing to even stop at their bus stops," and asked the board to consider options to improve busing so more students will attend regularly.
Superintendent Dr. Schwarz thanked the student representatives for their service and praised district celebrations and school improvements. The board and administration noted the awards are a highlight of the district year and encouraged continued partnership with community organizations.
