Dothan advisory committee recommends $573,721 in CDBG awards, including $126,000 for Moody Senior Village

City staff and the Community Development Advisory Committee presented recommended CDBG allocations on May 19, totaling $573,721 (HUD entitlement of $557,721 plus prior-year funds).
Committee chair Anita Dawkins Weatherington and CDBG administrator Carol Wales outlined competitive review criteria, HUD national objectives, and the five-year consolidated-plan priorities used to evaluate applicants. The committee reported 90 organizations attended orientation; 27 met submission requirements and 27 were considered for awards.
Recommended awards included public service grants (examples: Boys & Girls Club $7,000; City Leisure Services youth sports $7,658; Family Service Center workforce training $5,000), public facilities funding (Art Window Project $37,000; City public works sidewalk project $57,000; Community Advancement Foundation parking lot $89,000), and housing allocations (Brown Foundation / Moody Senior Village $126,000; Wiregrass Habitat critical home repair $20,063). Several applicants were not funded this cycle because of limited resources.
Carol Wales explained next steps: commission approval scheduled for June 2, a 30-day public notice window in July, final commission action in August and submission to HUD by Aug. 16. She also noted HUD retains final authority on national-objective compliance and that local general-fund support continues to be available for non-CDBG programs.
If approved June 2, staff will publish the required public notice and proceed with HUD submission timelines.
