The Sunnyvale City Council approved the fiscal-year preliminary engineer’s report for the downtown parking maintenance district on May 19, adopting staff’s recommendation to continue the assessment that funds maintenance of public parking lots serving Murphy Avenue businesses.
A public speaker urged the council to reject the report, arguing downtown has a surplus of parking and that assessments ultimately raise costs for renters and patrons. The speaker suggested the city cancel the assessment and reconsider use of downtown surface lots for housing. Vice Mayor Melinger and others defended the assessment as necessary to maintain lots heavily used by businesses and to support upgrades such as electric-vehicle charging infrastructure. Council Member Cisneros said concerns raised by the public were worthy of broader discussion but did not change the staff recommendation.
Outcome: Council approved the staff recommendation and passed the item 7–0. The assessment proceeds to administrative steps required under state law for maintenance-district financing.
