Gregg County Commissioners Court approved a discretionary exemption purchase Tuesday to replace an emergency backup generator at East Texas Regional Airport after the airport's generator failed on April 25.
Purchasing staff told the court the county currently has a rental generator in place but needs to procure a permanent replacement immediately. Staff said a vendor has not yet diagnosed whether the failure resulted from a lightning strike; if so, an insurance claim may follow. The purchase would be made under Texas Local Government Code §262.024 as an emergency procurement.
Commissioner McKenna moved to approve the purchase and to authorize the county judge to sign all procurement documents; the court approved the motion by voice vote. Purchasing staff and airport officials present were available to answer questions about fuel type and delivery timing.
The county intends to proceed with procurement to restore redundant power at the airport; the county packet and procurement records will record vendor, specifications and final costs.
