Palaka celebrates new public works facility nearing completion

City public‑works staff told the Palaka City Commission on May 14 that the new public works facility is nearing substantial completion and should be operational for staff in the coming week.
Public Works Director Mr. Verio said the new building expands the department from about 1,460 square feet to roughly 5,000 square feet, adding ADA access, larger locker and break rooms, a computer lab for staff training, private superintendent offices and a conference room large enough for full crew meetings. The facility also features a four‑vehicle indoor flow design that allows trucks to pull in one side and exit the other, epoxy‑sealed floors, and a new automated lift system for heavy trucks — upgrades staff said will greatly improve safety.
"This is a really big thing," Verio said, describing a new automated truck lift that allows technicians to work safely under heavy vehicles. He also said a pole‑barn bid will be advertised to shelter 18 trucks so equipment is protected from sun and weather, preserving hydraulics and reducing maintenance costs.
Commissioners praised the project as a long‑awaited improvement for employee safety and operational efficiency. Staff said minor punch‑list items remain and they will coordinate a public‑relations rollout with the city's PIO when occupancy is finalized.
Background: The expansion replaces an older, cramped facility and includes storage reorganization, a forklift for material handling, and mechanical improvements intended to reduce long‑term maintenance costs and increase worker safety.
