Parent urges change to graduation policy so middle‑school students receive credit for Keystone courses

At the May 18 meeting a resident urged the Jersey Shore Area School District board to revise graduation policy 217 so middle‑school students who pass Keystone‑associated courses can receive credit in the grade the course is offered.
Michelle Moore of Watson Township said two common scenarios illustrate the issue: seventh graders who took Algebra I and passed the Algebra Keystone yet return to take eighth‑grade geometry in the high school setting, and eighth graders who pass Algebra I and the Keystone but are not being credited toward graduation in the grade the course was offered. "A student might begin satisfying statewide requirements as early as the grade in which the Keystone‑associated course is offered," she read from Pennsylvania Department of Education guidance she provided to the board and asked the district to align its policy accordingly.
Moore said the change would not reduce rigor but would "give credit where credit is due," help students access high school co‑op and CTE opportunities earlier and urged the board to make the change effective for 2026–27 and retroactive for students who already met the requirements. The board thanked her; no immediate vote was taken and members indicated they would consider the request in forthcoming policy discussions.
