The Gonzales City Council used part of its May 18 meeting to celebrate local accomplishments, presenting certificates to the Gonzales High School track and field team after their PCAL Santa Lucia division title and honoring Mayor Pro Tem Liz Silva with an agricultural distinction.
Council members invited student athletes and coaches to the front of the chamber for certificates and a photograph. Coach Margie Daniels thanked the city and the school district for investing in the stadium and track, credited that investment with helping the team secure the school's first PCAL Santa Lucia division title in about 100 years, and highlighted several individual contributors, including sophomore Liz Bagua.
"I would like to please recognize my female athlete, Liz Bagua, who is a double individual champion and also qualified for Masters and the CCS championship," Coach Margie Daniels said, praising athletes who stepped out of comfort zones to score points for the team.
Separately the council read a proclamation naming Liz Silva the Growershipper Foundation's 2026 agricultural woman of the year. Silva, identified in the meeting transcript as Mayor Pro Tem, accepted the recognition and thanked her family, colleagues and the community, saying she was humbled by the honor and encouraging young people engaged in agriculture.
The recognition items were ceremonial and non-action items on the agenda; council members applauded the honorees and took photographs after the presentations.
